The Story
Persona 4 Golden is set in a small rural town called Inaba. Every year, the town experiences a minor crime wave during the months of April and May, in which a number of mysterious murders take place. However, this year is different—during the “Midnight Channel” television program’s broadcast late one night, a strange rumor begins to spread that if you stare into your television screen at midnight on a foggy night, your soul mate will appear on the channel. When one of the murders mirrors this rumor almost exactly, High School freshman Yukiko Amagi’s best friend Chie Satonaka becomes worried that Yukiko might be next, and asks her fellow student Yu Narukami to come with her to investigate the rumor. After rescuing another friend, Yosuke Hanamura, from being trapped within the television by a strange black liquid that appears when his shadow self tries to kill him (an event related to the murder cases), Yu and company learn that they are capable of summoning powerful Personas— supernatural entities born from their psyche—to fight against these monsters. After managing to defeat their shadows and returning to their own world, each of them makes a vow to solve these murders before another victim is claimed.
What starts out as an urban legend quickly spirals into something much more sinister as Yukiko disappears after being attacked by her shadow self in May. Chie and Yu venture into the TV world again in order to save her, but they are unable to reach her in time. Chie’s shadow self attempts to kill her as well; however, Yu manages to save her and defeat Chie’s shadow. It is revealed that Dojima is being blackmailed by Taro Namatame, who claims he knows who is responsible for the murders; however, Namatame ends up getting himself killed shortly thereafter while attempting to apprehend the killer himself.
As more victims are claimed and evidence begins piling up, it soon becomes clear that there is someone else working behind the scenes—someone who knows about Persona and wants revenge on those responsible for ruining their life many years ago…
The Characters
The protagonists of Persona 4 are a group of high school students from Inaba who become involved in investigating mysterious murders.
The main character is the silent protagonist, who is named by the player and can be customized in terms of gender, hair color, and personality. The main character’s best friend is Yosuke Hanamura, who transfers to their school from the city. Chie Satonaka is another friend of the protagonist, a tomboy with an interest in martial arts. Yukiko Amagi is a classmate of the protagonist who works at her family’s inn; she has low self-esteem but is otherwise kind and level-headed. Kanji Tatsumi is a rebellious tough guy who initially appears to be homophobic; he joins the investigation team after discovering his own Shadow Self. Rise Kujikawa is an idol who returns to Inaba to take a break from her career; she provides support to the investigation team using her persona, Himiko. Teddie is a sentient teddy bear who helps the protagonists by making them aware of the TV world and their Personas. Naoto Shirogane is a junior detective from the city who becomes involved in the murders; Naoto poses as a boy due to sexism within the police department, but eventually comes out as transgender to the investigation team.
